About KLH

Founded in 1957 as KLH Research and Development Corporation in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States. Their founders: Henry Kloss, Malcolm S. Low, and Josef Anton Hofmann endeavored to produce exceptional loudspeakers. KLH was once the largest loudspeaker company in the world, they employed over 500 people and shipped over 30,000 speakers a year, to both retailers and distributors throughout six continents.

Due to being a ground-breaking company of firsts, KLH have deeply rooted their place in the high-fidelity sound reproduction industry. They started out by launching the first-ever high-selectivity FM table radio: Model Eight. Not long after this, they created the first full-range electrostatic loudspeaker: Model Nine, which is still highly regarded by the audiophile community today, as well as being picked by Stereophile Magazine as “one of the twelve best loudspeakers ever built”.

As well as this, KLH also created the first portable solid state record player: Model Eleven. And they even introduced Ray Dolby of Dolby Laboratories to the consumer product market through the first reel-to-reel tape recorder featuring Dolby noise reduction, with the Model Forty.

Some of the worlds best selling loudspeakers have been introduced by KLH over its many years. Most notably, Model Five, Model Six, and Model Seventeen. Each of these featured an acoustic suspension loudspeaker design, originally developed by Edgar Villchur and Henry Kloss, KLH’s founder.

KLH was recently purchased in 2017 by David P. Kelley (a longtime Klipsch and VOXX executive). Kelley renamed the company KLH Audio, and their global headquarters is now located in Noblesville, Indiana. He hopes to continue to grow the strong success of KLH Audio, starting by bringing these amazing loudspeakers into Australia with local distributors Powermove.

David also spoke with a Maureen Jenson from Technology Insider Group in May 2018, to discus the long successful history of KLH, his motivations towards purchasing the well-known brand, and what he has planned for their future. Keep your eyed peeled for more exciting news and milestones we can add to the KLH history books!
